← All GuidesCan your business run without you for three weeks? Why buyers care.
This single question, more than any spreadsheet, tells a buyer how much risk they're actually taking on. A business that needs you in the room is a business they have to price down.
Every acquisition includes an implicit bet that the business keeps performing after the current owner leaves. When too much of the operation lives in the owner's head, relationships, or personal authority, that bet gets riskier, and buyers respond to risk with a lower offer or a longer earnout tied to your continued involvement.
Owner dependence shows up in specific, findable places: who signs off on pricing, who the key customers actually call, who understands the systems well enough to fix them when they break. A buyer's diligence team will find every one of these gaps.
The fix isn't complicated, but it takes time. Build a second layer of leadership that can make real decisions. Document what currently lives only in your head. Let go of the parts of the business that only you can do, well before you plan to sell, so the business has already proven it can run without you.
