PROACTIVE TAX STRATEGY

What are the real tax advantages of oil and gas partnerships?

Intangible drilling costs, which can often be deducted in full in the year they're incurred, make oil and gas partnerships one of the few remaining investments with this direct a tax benefit.

Intangible drilling costs cover the majority of what it takes to drill a well, labor, fuel, and site preparation, and current tax law allows a large share of these costs to be deducted immediately rather than depreciated over years.

A depletion allowance provides an additional, ongoing deduction against the income the well produces, functioning similarly to depreciation but specific to natural resource extraction.

This is a higher-risk, higher-complexity category of investment than real estate, and the tax benefit shouldn't be the sole reason to invest. It works best as one piece of a broader alternative investment strategy, evaluated on the underlying deal quality first.
